Suitable for COMPLETE BEGINNERS

Always wanted to learn to knit but don't know where to start? Come along to our relaxed and friendly 4-week beginner knitting workshop and learn the essential skills step-by-step. In this series of classes, you will create 4 different knitted squares that will then be sewn together to give you a washcloth at the end.

WEEK 1: GARTER SQUARE
Learn how to cast on, work the knit stitch to create a garter square and cast off your stitches.

WEEK 2: STOCKINETTE SQUARE
Learn how to work the knit and purl stitches to create a stockinette square.

WEEK 3: GARTER SQUARE WORKED DIAGONALLY
Learn how to combine the knit stitch with increases and decreases for a garter square.

WEEK 4: STOCKINETTE SQUARE WORKED DIAGONALLY AND MATTRESS STITCH
Learn how to combine the knit and purl stitches with increases and decreases for a stockinette square. End with the mattress stitch to sew up the 4 squares into one washcloth that showcases what you have learnt.

During the course, you will also learn about yarn weights and choosing the right needles for your yarn and project, basic knitting terminology and additional tips & techniques for your knitting.

You'll be supported throughout the course in a small, relaxed and encouraging group; with plenty of time to practise, ask questions and develop your skills.

Level of Experience: No previous experience necessary. Learn the basics in four weeks and take away a finished washcloth.

Materials: All attendees will receive a full kit that includes the yarn, knitting needles and notions for all 4 projects in the workshop.

WEEK 1: GETTING STARTED
Learn how to hold and manipulate your yarn and hook, plus the chain and slip stitch.
Take home: A crocheted lavender flower

WEEK 2: BUILDING YOUR SKILLS
Learn the treble crochet stitch and start combining stitches to create simple patterns.
Take home: Your first granny square

WEEK 3: STRAIGHT EDGES
Learn the half treble crochet stitch, how to work into the front loop only and how to create neat, straight edges.
Take home: A crocheted mug cosy

WEEK 4: CROCHETING IN THE ROUND
Learn how to crochet in the round (and realise that counting to 6 might not be as simple as you previously thought!)
Take home: A crocheted basket

During the course, you will also learn:

• Yarn weights - understand the different weights and what they are suitable for

• Hook sizes- learn how to choose the right hook for your yarn and project

• Pattern reading - an introduction to understanding basic crochet patterns

• Essential techniques - build your confidence through hands-on practice
